Receiving and Responding to Criticism

Unsuitable responses

Most people respond instinctively to criticism by:

  1. Counter attacking (become defensive) by using sarcasm, put downs or snapping. This does not help to build a relationship with the critic, so the issue is seldom dealt with. Future relationships with the critic are prejudiced

  2. Becoming a "victim" and walking away from the criticism silently. Here people lose respect for you and you may never find out what the critic really intended.
